The Salkantay Trek: Is It Right for You?

By June 5, 2026 2 min read

The Salkantay Trek has earned its place among National Geographic’s 25 best treks in the world — and having guided hundreds of adventurers along its paths, we at Soncco Adventures understand exactly why. Over five days, this trek takes you from the high Andean plateau beneath the imposing Salkantay glacier to the humid warmth of the cloud forest, culminating at the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu.

The Route

The journey begins in Mollepata, a small town southwest of Cusco. Day one climbs gradually to the base camp at Soraypampa (3,900m), where the Humantay Lake day hike is an optional highlight. Day two is the most challenging — ascending the Salkantay Pass at 4,650m before descending through increasingly lush scenery. Days three and four follow the river through the cloud forest, passing coffee and fruit farms, to reach Aguas Calientes. Day five is the reward: Machu Picchu.

Fitness Level Required

The Salkantay Trek is classified as moderate to challenging. The high altitude (the Salkantay Pass reaches 4,650m) is the biggest challenge for most trekkers. We recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco (3,400m) before the trek begins. Regular hiking fitness is sufficient — you do not need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable walking 15-20km per day with a light daypack.
